Cayaya Birding

Cayaya Birding organized the first Audubon Christmas Bird Count on Atitlan Volcano on 14 December 2007. Los Tarrales Reserve hosted an introductory workshop and meetings during the count.

Two groups with a total of 9 observers were counting birds in Los Tarrales Reserve. One was led by Josué de León Lux on the upper part of the volcano (1400-3500 m), and a second group was led by Claudia Avendaño in the lower part of the reserve (750-1000 m).

In the Los Tarrales Reserve a total of 927 birds of 152 species was detected during this Christmas Bird Count. In addition, 11 species were recorded during the count week. One of the flagship species of the Atitlan Volcano Christmas Bird Count was the Horned Guan; four birds were seen in the cloud forest on the upper part of the volcano cone. Also Azure-rumped Tanager was recorded in the cloud forest. Pink-headed Warbler was seen during the count week.

It follows a list of species and numbers of individuals recorded during the First Christmas Bird Count in Los Tarrales (Nomenclature according to AOU 1998 and supplements, most recent update AOU 2007).
